Things to think about when planning an Alternative Teaching Lesson

  • What is the big concept being taught?
  • What is the purpose of the small group?
  • Which students should be in the small group?
  • What will each teachers role be?
  • Are we always using this model for the same purpose?
  • Are the same kids always in the small group?

Benefits

  • Allows for reteaching and extension activities.
  • Instruction can be differentiated easily.
  • Can be used for pre-teaching skills or vocabulary.

Things to Consider

  • Students could be stereotyped into ability groups.
  • Teachers may not be seen as equal if roles are never alternated.
